Planning & Equipment

The Monte Rosa Tour is one of the most demanding multi-day hikes in Europe.

Good preparation and the right equipment are therefore essential. Inexperienced mountain hikers should only tackle individual stages accompanied by a mountain guide.

Depending on the weather conditions, June to September is usually the best time for the tour. Guided sections are also available in many stage destinations. You can get further information from the local tourist offices.

Recommended equipment

  • Sturdy mountain hiking boots: supportive footwear with good tread for alpine terrain
  • Weatherproof clothing: rain and wind protection, plus warm layers for changeable conditions
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen due to intense sunshine at high altitude
  • First-aid kit: a small first-aid set for the trail
  • Enough food: energy-rich snacks such as fruit, bread or chocolate
  • Plenty of fluids: enough water or still (non-carbonated) drinks
  • Alpine equipment depending on the stage: crampons, helmet, rope and ice axe may be required on high-alpine sections
