This stage at a glance

The fourth stage of the Tour Monte Rosa is one of the longest and most demanding sections of the entire route—yet also one of the most fascinating in terms of scenery. If you’d like to make the stage a bit easier, the lift system of the Monterosa Ski area offers the option to shorten part of the ascent and make the stage more accessible, without missing out on the beauty of the experience.

What you can expect on this stage:

  • The route starts in Gressoney-La-Trinité and first leads through impressive alpine pastures in the Aosta Valley, a vivid testament to local culture and traditions. As you hike near Lake Gabiet, wide alpine panoramas accompany you, gradually giving way to high-mountain terrain.
  • The ascent climbs to Passo dei Salati, the symbolic highlight of the stage, where a bronze ibex marks the natural boundary between the Gressoney Valley and Valsesia. Here the landscape opens into spectacular scenery dominated by the peaks of the Monte Rosa massif.
  • Descent towards Alagna on a marked trail through a moraine landscape
  • In the Olen Valley, you pass the Devil’s Stone (Pietra del Diavolo), which is linked to an old legend
  • Junction to Passo Foric, with a route through Val d’Otro to Alagna and the option to stop for refreshments at Rifugio Zar Senni
  • Continue through the Olen Valley to Alpe Pianalunga, with a connection to the gondola lift down to Alagna
  • Rest breaks and an overnight stay are possible at Rifugio Grande Halte
  • If you continue descending on foot, you’ll reach Alagna in about an hour and a half. Alternatively, you can continue on to Rifugio Pastore, which offers one of the finest views of the south side of the Monte Rosa massif.
